The San Antonio Spurs have been extremely busy so far during this offseason, and they haven’t shown any signs of letting up. After signing LaMarcus Aldridge to a big deal, they decided to let Cory Joseph walk in free agency and sign with the Toronto Raptors. Ray McCallum was the latest pickup for the Spurs, and could end up being one of the most underrated moves of the whole season.

During his first two seasons with the Sacramento Kings, McCallum showed quite a bit of potential for the future. San Antonio was able to snag him for a second round pick, which is an absolute bargain for a player with the physical ability and basketball talent that the 24-year-old point guard out of Beverly Hills, Michigan possesses. Playing behind Tony Parker is going to help him develop much quicker than he would have in Sacramento, and there is a good chance that he will work his way into a role during the 2015-16 season.

Last season with the Kings, McCallum ended up playing in 68 games and started in 30 of those appearances. He ended up averaging 7.4 points, 2.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. McCallum upped those averages to 11.2 points, 4.3 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game during the 30 games that he started.

McCallum will need to work on his three-point shooting ability if he wants to take the next step offensively, as he shot just 30.6 percent from behind the three-point arc. He did improve his overall shooting percentage to 43.8 percent from 37.7 percent the season before. There is a lot for the Spurs’ coaching staff to work with, which is a very encouraging change for McCallum as well.

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, McCallum is going to be a much improved player simply from working with Gregg Popovich as his new head coach. Sacramento has been a head coaching carousel, and it is finally time that he will have a consistent head coach. Popovich is one of the best NBA coaches of all-time, and he will help McCallum take the next step and could unlock his full potential within the next season or two.

Needless to say, the Kings were in no position to be giving away a young player like McCallum. They already struck out on acquiring multiple big name free agents unless they can make something happen with one of the few remaining, and McCallum would have been a very solid backup for Rajon Rondo.

That being said, the move to the Spurs could be the best thing that could have ever happened for McCallum’s career.

While there is no guarantee that he will find consistent minutes this season with the Spurs, there is no question that he will learn and develop into a much better basketball player. He has more potential than most have given him credit for, and there is a decent chance that he could end up winning the primary backup point guard job over Patty Mills. McCallum may never become a star, but he has the potential to become an above average role player on a championship-contending team like the Spurs.
