During the craziness that was the first week of NBA free agency, center DeAndre Jordan made a verbal commitment to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. It did not come as much of a surprise considering many pegged the Mavericks as being the frontrunners to land the big man. As we now know, a bigger surprise was in store for all parties involved as Jordan recently decided to withdrawal his commitment and sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, which has the Mavericks enraged.

“This is something that I’ve never seen in my career, and I know that it doesn’t happen very often,” Dallas small forward Chandler Parsons said, according to ESPN. “When a man gives you his word and an organization his word, especially when that organization put in so much effort and I walked him through this process and was very, very open and willing to work with him, it’s just very unethical and disrespectful.”

Parsons, who played a big part in convincing Dwight Howard to sign with the Houston Rockets in free agency two years ago, was the centerpiece in pitching Jordan to ink a deal with the team. The Mavericks felt they had accomplished what they set ought to do, which was upgrade their frontcourt. Unfortunately, the Clippers pulled out all the stops to convince him to re-sign with the team.

The issue with Jordan telling Dallas he planned to sign with them meant the Mavericks did not pursue other offseason plans, which included trading for big man Roy Hibbert or signing center Kosta Koufos in free agency.

An infuriated Parsons has decided to voice his displeasure with Jordan through the media.

“He wasn’t ready to be a franchise player. He was scared,” Parsons said. “He was scared to take the next step in his career. There was no other reason other than that he was comfortable and he has friendships there. How you make a business decision like that is beyond me. How you ignore an owner like Mark [Cuban]who is in your hometown just waiting for a chance to talk to you is beyond me.

“I don’t think he made a mistake. I think he’ll be good in L.A. He’s got a good team, he’s got a great point guard, he’s got Blake, but I think he could have been a superstar in Dallas. He could have been the man in Dallas. Never in a million years did I think that this was even a possibility.”

The Mavericks have reportedly shown interest in trading for Milwaukee Bucks veteran center Zaza Pachulia to fill the glaring need in the frontcourt. That is a hard constellation prize to accept after Jordan was essentially a done deal.
