After losing the DeAndre Jordan sweepstakes, the Dallas Mavericks knew they needed to make more roster moves in order to maintain their contender status. Unfortunately, the assumed addition of Deron Williams, who reached a buyout agreement with the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, is nothing but a sad consolation prize.

Now don’t get me wrong — Williams certainly fills a hole for the Mavericks, and he’s a quality point guard capable of providing big numbers in Dallas. Unfortunately, he’s not the true difference maker that Jordan would have been in the middle of the Mavericks lineup.

Williams is coming off a horrible 2014-15 season that saw him put up putrid numbers. Managing 13 points, 6.6 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 38.7 percent from the field isn’t what you want from one of the better point guards in the NBA. While the change of scenery — and a return to his home town — will certainly help Williams, it’s not the home run the Mavericks needed.

Especially with a new backcourt, no dominant force at center and an aging Dirk Nowitzki, the forecast isn’t fare for the Mavericks. That doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t make the playoffs or earn a Top 4 seeding, but it certainly doesn’t bode well for any championship hopes they may have.

There’s a possibility we see the Williams of old now that he’s out of Brooklyn. However, my money is on him having another down year and proving that the whiff on Jordan was too much for the Mavericks to handle.
