Deron Williams has been a fairly big disappointment for the Brooklyn Nets since they acquired him and seen his career get derailed by injuries. He is still capable of going off for a big game on any given night, but the consistency has been an issue. That being said, he is looking to get a buyout from the Nets so that he can sign a contract with his hometown Dallas Mavericks and start a new chapter of his career.

Dallas is dealing with the loss of DeAndre Jordan, who had committed to signing with the Mavericks before having second thoughts and deciding to break his verbal commitment to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. Mark Cuban was able to go out and snag Wesley Matthews away from the Portland Trail Blazers in free agency, but that move alone isn’t enough to make the offseason a success. Being able to acquire or sign Williams would be the move that would save the Mavericks’ offseason.

Last season with the Nets, Williams ended up averaging 13.0 points, 6.6 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. Those numbers don’t look terribly impressive, but he showed some flashes throughout the year of being the star point guard that he once was. Williams’ shooting percentages did drop off a bit during the 2014-15 season, hitting just 38.7 percent of his shots overall and 36.7 percent from behind the three-point arc.

One of the biggest signs that Williams is still capable of breaking through with huge performances was Game 4 in their playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks when he went off for 35 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Those games aren’t going to be every night, but he is capable of doing much more than he has over the last couple seasons. Simply signing with the Mavericks might be the change of scenery that Williams has been needing.

Playing for a hometown team is always a major draw for any player in sports at any level. Williams would likely be rejuvenated by making that type of a move, and he would immediately be welcomed with open arms.

Cuban has some money to spend, and he knows that he is missing a major piece. Dirk Nowitzki is still capable of putting up big numbers, but they lost Tyson Chandler in free agency while they were pursuing Jordan. Matthews will be a big pickup for the Mavericks as well, but they are in desperate need of adding a point guard after the failed Rajon Rondo situation.

Brooklyn will likely work with Williams to get out from under his contract to help lessen their payroll. It doesn’t appear that there are any other teams that will be in consideration for Williams if he does get his buyout, and it would be a fairly quick transition to signing a deal with Dallas.

All of that being said, the Mavericks have to bring in a big player in order to save their offseason. Losing out on one of the NBA‘s most dominant big men stings a lot, but Williams would be exactly what the doctor ordered to help them move past that situation.
