The Miami Heat have had arguably the best free agency period out of any other team not named San Antonio this summer. By managing to re-sign Goran Dragic, Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng, the Heat will have one of the strongest starting fives in the entire Eastern Conference. Still, even with such a strong starting lineup, the second unit was another facet of the roster that needed to be addressed.

Outside of drafting Justise Winslow with the 10th overall pick, the Heat hadn’t done much to address their bench needs until recently, when the organization managed to sign eight-year veteran Gerald Green to a minimum contract. This could very well be the Heat’s best move in free agency based on what Green will be able to bring to the second unit.

Green is a legitimate rotation player in every sense of the word. Not only did Green rank in the 90th percentile in scoring efficiency in 2014, he has shot over 40 percent from beyond the arc over his entire career. One of the Heat’s biggest weaknesses last season was three-point shooting, so this obviously fills an immediate need. Green is also a ridiculous athlete on the fast break, which will pair extremely well with his former teammate in Phoenix and new teammate in Miami, Goran Dragic.

The Heat had barely any cap space to sign any substantial free agents this summer, so nabbing Green at the minimum is a huge win for the organization. If Green can produce the same type of offense with Miami like he did during his breakout season in 2013 with the Suns, then the Heat just boosted their bench tenfold.
