The Detroit Pistons will have a whole new look in the 2015-16 season. They have made a number of moves to put them in a decent position to compete for a playoff spot next season.

Detroit finished last season with a 32-50 record, making them fifth in the Central Division. Their positioning should definitely improve a little after the moves they’ve made this summer. The Pistons’ first step into becoming a better team was the trade that sent Caron Butler and Shawne Williams to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for stretch power forward Ersan Ilyasova.

With the addition of Ilyasova, the Pistons now have a big who can really space the floor and create some space down low for Andre Drummond. This appears to be exactly what head coach Stan Van Gundy wanted. Ilyasova is also a pretty solid defender and rebounder.

The Pistons also brought in former San Antonio Spurs center Aron Baynes. Baynes is not a name that many know, but he adds depth at the center position and he played under Gregg Popovich, so you know he knows the game.

Another underrated move for Detroit this summer was the acquiring of Marcus Morris, Danny Granger, and Reggie Bullock from the Phoenix Suns for future draft picks. Morris adds some more frontcourt depth and is another player who can stretch the floor from the power forward position. Granger is nothing like he once was, but he may be able to add some offense as a role player if he can stay healthy. Bullock is talented, but likely won’t play much of a factor next season.

All of these moves were on top of a very good draft by the Pistons. With the No. 8 overall pick, they selected Arizona small forward Stanley Johnson, who has been very impressive in Summer League play. In the second round, Detroit took Villanova’s Darrun Hilliard, who is a gifted shooter.

The Pistons capped the free agency period off by re-signing point guard Reggie Jackson to a five-year, $80 million contract. The organization is putting a lot of faith in him, so we’ll see how it all pans out.

All in all, the Pistons got better this summer.
