New York Knicks Should Finish Free Agency Strong By Re-Signing Alexey Shved

The New York Knicks weren’t able to land any of the NBA‘s stars in free agency. However, they undoubtedly made some savvy moves that improved a roster which has struggled so mightily in recent years.

Although they’ll need developing, Kristaps Porzingis and Jerian Grant were great additions in the draft. Guys like Arron Afflalo and Robin Lopez will certainly help Carmelo Anthony in the starting five. However, there’s one more obvious move to make, and that would be re-signing G Alexey Shved.

Shved hasn’t overwhelmed over his three-year career stateside, but has shown flashes of brilliance in the league — particularly this season during a brief stint with the Knicks. Shved started the season with the Philadelphia 76ers, was traded to the Houston Rockets where he spent nine games and ultimately landed in New York for the stretch run.

Overall, Shved averaged 20.4 points and five assists per 36 minutes in 42 games. Sure, his per-game averages look quite different, but judging Shved on his per-game averages is simply unfair. As mainly a role player, he only averaged 18.3 minutes per game for the season.

Shved was able to have the most success on a per-game basis with the Knicks last season. In 16 games after the trade, Shved averaged 14.8 points and 3.6 assists per game in 26.4 minutes, which is clearly far more indicative of the player he is. He stepped up for New York no matter if he was asked to play his natural position at the two, or fill in at point guard, which is hardly a perfect fit considering his 6-foot-6 frame.

Of course, re-signing Shved isn’t going to be the difference between making the playoffs and hitting the golf course come next April for the Knicks. However, there’s reason to believe Shved could flourish off the bench in New York, especially considering Afflalo will be starting at shooting guard, and that guy deals with several horrific shooting slumps every season. Thus, Shved will get plenty of chances to excel.

Shved has offers from teams overseas, so the Knicks must bite the bullet now and use their remaining cap space on Shved prior to him being lured away.
