Have you ever had a recurring nightmare? Well, Joel Embiid is living through one right now with news coming out that he will miss all of the 2015-2016 NBA season due to a second round of surgery on his right foot.

Where does that leave the Philadelphia 76ers? They are probably glad that they took Jahlil Okafor with the third overall pick in this summer’s draft, because the former Duke Blue Devil is going to be in the starting lineup when the season begins. Okafor played well in his Las Vegas Summer League debut against the Los Angeles Lakers, one of two teams that passed on him in the draft. He scored 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting while adding 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Second overall draft pick D’Angelo Russell only recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists, but his team won 68-60 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

It is a shame that we will probably never see a healthy Embiid contribute in the NBA, but at least the Sixers have a new big man that they can build around. Okafor will get plenty of playing time next season, and he will be one of the favorites to win Rookie of the Year due to that and his ability to fill up a stat sheet. There are not many rookies in the NBA who you can draw up a play for and get consistent results from, but Okafor is one of them. Expect greatness from him next season because he has been a winner at every level of basketball, and that shouldn’t change in the NBA. He might not be an All-Star right away, but this is a young man with the potential to carry a franchise.
