Sacramento Kings Rumors: Andrea Bargnani Would Provide Team With Much-Needed Shooter

The Sacramento Kings have been awfully busy this offseason. It began with a power struggle between head coach George Karl and team ownership as Karl, who reportedly was given final say on all personnel decisions when he signed his contract in February, attempted to trade DeMarcus Cousins to the Los Angeles Lakers, but the trade discussions were nixed by ownership.

The team has since drafted former Kentucky center Willie Cauley-Stein and signed Rajon Rondo, Marco Belinelli, Kosta Koufos and Caron Butler. Now, the Kings are reportedly deep into contract discussions with former number one overall pick Andrea Bargnani.

Bargnani spent the first seven years of his NBA career with the Toronto Raptors, before playing the last two seasons with the New York Knicks. His ability to spread the floor as a stretch-four will fit perfectly with Karl’s offensive style. Last season, Bargnani averaged 14.8 points per game for the Knicks, and the Kings will welcome his ability to knock down jumpers, as that’s one of the biggest weaknesses of the team’s roster as currently constructed.

While it’s unclear if the Kings have made enough moves to contend for a playoff spot in the extremely deep Western Conference, it’s obvious the team has grossly improved. With Cousins, Koufos, Bargnani, and Cauley-Stein up fron, and Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, and Rondo in the back-court, the Kings have a number of solid options. The key will be getting Rondo to return to his form from his Boston Celtics days. If Karl can coax that out of the former four-time All-Star, there could be some special times on the horizon for the Kings.
