The San Antonio Spurs went into the 2015 offseason fresh off a devastating first-round loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, and with a roster full of questions. Instead, not only did Spurs management hold onto many of their core players, but also managed to add other talented assets that will keep this team at the top of the Western Conference.

The Spurs’ starting lineup had many players on expiring contracts or contracts with opt-out possibilities, and instead of bowing out to other franchises offering top dollar, the Spurs rolled up their proverbial sleeves and got face to face meetings with all of their players, bringing along Coach Gregg Popovich as the preemptive finisher.

The Spurs managed to re-sign starting shooting guard Danny Green to 3-year, $12 million deal, former Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard to a 5-year, $90 million deal, and Tim Duncan to a measly 2-year, $10.4 million contract. All of these deals are extremely beneficial for the Spurs considering all three of these players could have received much more money from numerous other teams around the league that would have wanted their services.

Outside of re-signing their key players, the Spurs truly struck gold in free agency by not only convincing former All-Star forward David West to sign with the team for the veteran’s minimum, but by also convincing 4-time All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge to leave Portland and form one of the strongest frontcourts in the NBA playing alongside Duncan.

The Spurs now have on paper the best starting lineup in the NBA with Tony Parker (PG), Danny Green (SG), Kawhi Leonard (SF), LaMarcus Aldridge (PF) and Tim Duncan (C). The Spurs’ bench hasn’t really taken a hit considering they brought David West on board. Although they lost both Tiago Splitter and Cory Joseph in free agency, the Spurs have managed to bounce back in major way with all of their other substantial free agent signings. The Spurs will continue to dominate the West for years to come with this current roster.
