The Los Angeles Lakers signed undrafted rookie Robert Upshaw to a contract on Friday. Upshaw’s deal is partially guaranteed for the first year, which means he gets to attend training camp at least. The second year of the deal is non-guaranteed.

Upshaw attended Washington as a sophomore this year, after being dismissed from Fresno State due to violation of team rules in 2013. The problem is that Upshaw didn’t learn his lesson, as he was dismissed from Washington before the season ended in January.

Before being dismissed, the 7-foot center was one of the best defenders in the country. Upshaw would’ve led the nation in blocks had he qualified, as he averaged 4.5 per game in only 24.9 minutes. He also averaged 10.9 points and 8.2 rebounds in the 19 games.

Had Upshaw not been kicked off the Huskies, he would’ve likely been a first-round pick. Upshaw is a perfect example of a high risk, high reward player. If he straightens up his act, the Lakers will get a promising rookie. He has the potential to be part of the Lakers’ young nucleus of D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle.

The Lakers were the second-worst defensive team in the NBA last season, allowing 105.3 points a game. There can be an improvement in that area, as they added defensive anchor Roy Hibbert and now Upshaw.

The 21-year old is also an upgrade from Robert Sacre, which will surely make Lakers fans excited. Don’t expect Upshaw to have a significant role this season, but if he sticks around, he can be a gem in 2-3 years.
