Denver Nuggets Should Send Ty Lawson Packing After 2nd DUI Within a Year

When the Denver Nuggets acquired Ty Lawson in a 2009 draft day trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, it looked to be a move that could make them serious contenders in the Western Conference. Instead, Lawson has never quite put it all together, and this morning he was arrested for his second DUI in 2015. After the Nuggets selected Emmanuel Mudiay with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, it seemed to make Lawson expendable, but now it makes Lawson disposable.

Lawson was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol for speeding on the 101 freeway on Tuesday morning after leaving a Hollywood nightclub. He was arrested at 2:29 a.m. and booked at the L.A. County Jail an hour later with his bond set at $5,000, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. The L.A. Sheriff’s Department did not list a charge for Lawson, but indicated the charge is a misdemeanor.

Back in January, Lawson was arrested for a DUI in Denver after police clocked him driving 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. He was cited for speeding, DUI and careless driving from the incident. Lawson was also charged with a DUI back in 2008 when he was playing at the University of North Carolina.

Earlier in the offseason, former Nuggets head coach George Karl reportedly inquired about a trade for Lawson that would’ve sent the point guard to the Sacramento Kings. The trade never materialized, and the Kings ended up signing Rajon Rondo.

With the team still a few years away from being contenders, the Nuggets should release Lawson and let Mudiay run the point as a rookie. Mudiay will gain valuable on-court experience, which will help his development down the road. While Lawson can still be an effective player in the NBA, it would be addition by subtraction for the Nuggets.
