The 2015 NBA free agency period was definitely one to remember. Some teams made flashy moves, while others made the necessary moves. One of the teams that made the necessary moves was the Memphis Grizzlies.

One can’t really expect the Grizzlies to go out and do anything flashy, because it’s simply not their style. What Memphis did do, however, is take care of their main goal for the offseason, which was to re-sign their All-Star center Marc Gasol. Gasol and the Grizzlies agreed to a five-year contract worth more than $100 million.

Gasol is the centerpiece of the Grizzlies franchise ,and it was an absolute must that they brought him back instead of letting one of the bigger markets snatch him up. Memphis is where Gasol wanted to be and Memphis is where he will stay.

As for the rest of free agency, the Grizzlies did not make too much noise. They did go out and sign power forward/center Brandan Wright to a three-year deal worth roughly $18 million. This was a very underrated move, but it was a move that made Memphis a better team. Plenty of teams were after Wright, so it was a huge pickup. Wright provides the Grizzlies with more frontcourt depth, as well as a shot-blocking presence.

Now, with Gasol, Zach Randolph, Wright and the Grizzlies’ first-round pick, Jarell Martin, the Grizzlies should have one of the more formidable frontcourts in the NBA.

Memphis also acquired veteran small forward Matt Barnes in a pre-draft trade with the Charlotte Hornets. Barnes’ toughness makes him a perfect fit for a gritty team like the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies certainly got better this offseason.
