Jamal Crawford Should Be A Trade Target For Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are entering a new era of basketball with the addition of head coach Fred Hoiberg. Former head coach Tom Thibodeau was fired earlier in the offseason, and the Bulls’ entire style of play is going to change during the 2015-16 NBA season. Due to the big changes that are being made, there are a few players who the Bulls should try to acquire ahead of the regular season.

Jamal Crawford is a name that comes to mind in particular, and would be exactly the type of dynamic scoring piece that the Bulls should look to acquire. The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly interested in trading him, and the Bulls have a few different pieces that they could move for him.

Chicago doesn’t have a “center” necessarily that they could move for Crawford, but they have been rumored to be looking to trade Taj Gibson. That could be exactly the type of player who would make Doc Rivers pull the trigger on a deal, but there is a chance that the Bulls wouldn’t even have to give up that much in return. Los Angeles has quite a bit of money on its books, and dropping Crawford’s salary is what it is looking to do by moving him.

At 35 years old, Crawford still has another solid year or two of basketball left in him. He is playing in the final year of his contract, which is a perfect fit for what the Bulls need. Having a short-term contract to go along with a bench scorer like Crawford would fill the bench needs that the Bulls have in their backcourt.

During the 2014-15 season with the Clippers, Crawford ended up averaging 15.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. His shooting percentages were a little bit disappointing as well (39.6 percent from the field overall and 32.7 percent from behind the three-point arc). Crawford did deal with some nagging injuries, and there is no doubt that he is capable of bouncing back with a much more efficient season.

If the Bulls are serious about representing the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals, they have to make a move or two to keep pace with the rest of the contenders. The Cleveland Cavaliers have made quite a few moves, and there are quite a few other teams that have made improvements this offseason as well.

Looking at the upcoming season, the Bulls are still going to be competitive whether they make another sizable move or not. Derrick Rose seemed to get back to full health during the playoffs last year, and the Bulls were also able to re-sign Jimmy Butler to a long-term deal. Despite the fact that they will be competitive, they could use another player who can get his own shots and create some looks for his teammates.

Whether or not the Bulls are actively searching for another piece or not, they need to place a call to the Clippers to see what it would take to acquire Crawford. He would be a great fit coming off of the bench, and they will be running the type of system that would fit his game nicely as well.
