Paul George's Move To Power Forward Will Fit Him Perfectly

Larry Bird and the Indiana Pacers have undergone a major overhaul this offseason and are a completely new-look team heading into the 2015-16 season. One player who will be back with a vengeance after having his season ruined by injuries last year is Paul George. He suffered a gruesome broken leg while playing in a scrimmage game for Team USA last summer, but was able to come back and play in the final six regular season games.

Now that the roster has completely changed and the Pacers are looking to play a faster offensive tempo, George is going to see some playing time at the power forward position. It isn’t something that he sounds too terribly excited about, but it is a move that will fit him perfectly and help him take his game to the next level.

George stands at 6-foot-9 and weighs in at 220 pounds. Those physical stats are not usually considered to be power forward size, but Bird believes he will be just fine at the position. Bird himself played the power forward position after starting his career as a small forward, and it changed his career for the better and helped make him the dominant legend that he is.

Looking ahead at the 2015-16 NBA season, George is in a very similar situation and it will end up resulting in major success for him. He is without question capable of defending the position with his athleticism and length, but he won’t have the type of muscle needed to bang with opposing power forwards. That could be an issue, but there is a good chance that the Pacers will make sure that he doesn’t have too bad of a matchup to go up against.

What will make this change so much of a success for George is the fact that a power forward will have to guard him on the offensive end of the court. Being able to go up against a slower and less athletic player than himself will give George a much easier time of things on offense. Indiana is trying to free him up and make his job easier scoring the basketball, and that is why Bird believes he will come around to the change. There aren’t many power forwards that will be able to run around and stick with him, and there are even less power forwards that can stay in front of him when he chooses to get to the rim.

It is going to force defenses to make much harder decisions on how they want to defend the Pacers’ smaller lineup. They will have to choose whether or not to start a small lineup, and if they start a bigger lineup whether or not putting their power forward on George is the right decision.

Indiana is looking to become a much better scoring team, and moving George into an easier position to score will help them do that. He may be opposed to the idea of switching positions now, but after a few games he will be loving it.
