San Antonio Spurs Still Have Glaring Holes To Fill

After inking the most coveted free agent of the offseason in LaMarcus Aldridge, many fans have touted the San Antonio Spurs as one of the most likely teams to win the 2016 NBA Finals. Although the team certainly has a shot at winning yet another championship in the upcoming season, San Antonio still has several weaknesses to improve upon.

Most importantly, the Spurs have only one true center on the roster in Boban Marjanovic, who has yet to play a game in the NBA. Last year’s starting center (Tiago Splitter) was recently traded to the Atlanta Hawks, paving the way for San Antonio to officially sign Aldridge. Although Aldridge is clearly an improvement over Splitter, the Spurs will certainly miss his ability to defend the rim. Now, San Antonio will have to figure out if Marjanovic is competent enough to block shots and replace Tim Duncan from time to time.

Furthermore, the Spurs will also have to address their perimeter play from the bench before the season gets underway. This offseason, San Antonio lost Cory Joseph to the Toronto Raptors. Although Joseph was a formidable defensive-minded backup, his loss is not as significant with Patty Mills still on the roster.

However, the Spurs were dealt a bigger blow when the Sacramento Kings signed Marco Belinelli. Belinelli was instant offense off of the bench for San Antonio, and his ability to knock down open perimeter shots will certainly be missed. In his career, Belinelli has shot 39.2 percent from three-point range, one of the best career percentages in the league today. To compensate for this loss, the Spurs signed Jonathon Simmons, another wildcard who has yet to appear in a game at this level.

With only one roster spot remaining, San Antonio may enter the upcoming season looking to Marjanovic, Simmons and second-year forward Kyle Anderson to take on vital roles. How comfortable these players look coming off of the bench in limited minutes could very well determine how much success the Spurs experience next year.
