Aaron Gordon had a Summer League to remember, showcasing why the Orlando Magic picked him at No. 4 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. But can he translate that success into helping the Magic win ball games next season? That is the million dollar question being asked in Orlando, because his production will be the x-factor in their 2015-16 season.

The Magic are pretty well set in the starting lineup, with Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo holding down the backcourt, and Mario Hezonja, Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic anchoring the frontcourt. But the bench is another story, as there will be some new faces there and they will be counted on to provide consistent production as Orlando tries to make a run for the playoffs.

That is why Gordon playing up to his potential is so important. He showed flashes of what he could do last season but was never able to sustain consistency due to some glaring flaws (getting lost in defensive sets) and injury. That’s why Gordon set out to have a beyond impressive Summer League because he wanted to show the Magic that he was capable of being the impact player they need.

Gordon has athleticism for days, and he can defend every position on the basketball court. He also showed a remarkable ability to hit threes, something that Orlando desperately needs. He is a hustler, a great rebounder and a capable passer, all of which are tools needed to make himself a household name. And those are tools that, if utilized, could make the Magic’s second unit one of the most versatile in the league.

If Gordon can transition his Summer League performance into regular season success, the Magic will be on their way to the playoffs. If not, it could be another long season in the Magic Kingdom.
