It’s been reported that the Boston Celtics agreed to a record-breaking deal with their second-round pick Jordan Mickey. The two parties agreed on a deal that was $5 million over four years, which is the most lucrative deal for a second-round pick in the history of the NBA. This deal was an absolute no-brainer for the Celtics, and it will greatly pay off over the next four years for a couple of reasons.

The first is the pending salary cap spike for the NBA. All of the buzz around the league for the last couple seasons has been about how the cap is going to skyrocket because of the new TV deal the league signed. Because of this, contract values are going to go up as well, so a contract worth about $1.25 million annually is going to be a bargain. In fact, by 2017 Mickey’s average salary will be worth only about one percent of the team’s total projected cap space. So even if Mickey doesn’t pan out for the team, the deal will not financially impede the Celtics at all.

The second reason this deal was a no-brainer is that Mickey has looked the best out of any Celtics rookie during Summer League play. Mickey was a consistent double-double threat for the team, and he averaged 13.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and a whopping 2.6 blocks in his five games played. He shot the ball well and played smart, hard and looked like a future stud for the team. Mickey will work his way into a crowded rotation as a rookie, and he should be the second option off the bench at power forward behind David Lee, though the team may be forced to play Amir Johnson because of his massive deal.

As for Mickey, this deal is a massive win for him as well. Though he has shown great potential early, nothing is guaranteed in the NBA. Mickey may end up being a bust at the NBA level, although it looks unlikely, so getting a four-year deal worth $5 million is a win for him. He’s also playing for a very young team which will allow him to showcase his skills, and this is a great situation for him.
