The NBA Summer Leagues have given teams an opportunity to view their players under a microscope in semi-professional playing environments. Based on how these players perform — whether or not they can handle the pressure and stress that comes with playing in the fast-paced style that is the NBA game — invitations are offered to join the team during training camp.

The Miami Heat will have their work cut out for them once training camp arrives based on how well so many of the Heat selected players performed during Summer League. Looking at the current roster and what players have guaranteed contracts, the Heat need to ultimately shore up the depth behind Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic at the guard position. When looking at the Heat standouts this summer, the one guard the team should seriously consider bringing on board is Josh Richardson.

Outside of Justise Winslow, the next best rookie on the Heat’s roster was their 40th overall draft pick from this summer, Josh Richardson. The feisty guard managed to average 11.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals in just 26.1 minutes a game. In one of his final games of the Summer League, he also managed to tally 23 points and four steals on 8-18 shooting. Richardson is an NBA-caliber guard who is ready to go, which is something not many of the other Heat prospects have working for them.

The Heat would be wise to not only offer Richardson an invite to training camp, but also consider giving the guard out of Tennessee one of the final fifteen roster spots that will be available come October. Depth is a premium that most title contending teams have, and if the Heat want to be considered one of the elite teams, then having depth behind both of their All-Star guards is a must.
