Kendall Marshall's Interest in Minnesota Timberwolves Makes No Sense

Kendall Marshall is still recovering from an ACL tear which occurred last season, and that’s partly why he is searching for the best basketball situation to help his career moving forward. He is reportedly interested in joining the Minnesota Timberwolves, but that idea doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

The Wolves already have a pretty full stable of point guards in Ricky Rubio and Tyus Jones. Rubio is due for a breakout season now that he has strong rim finishers in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns running beside the PG on the fast break, and Jones is a Minnesota hero who’ll most likely get more minutes than any other guard off the bench.

I get why Marshall is intrigued by the Timberwolves. They have the type of players who can rise above the rim and make his ability to throw alley-oops more valuable. The problem for Marshall is that there won’t be many minutes available to him. Maybe he is betting on his chances of outplaying Jones, but Marshall might be thinking too highly of himself if that is the case. A team like the Los Angeles Lakers or New York Knicks could surely find a spot for him, and he would be better off to recalibrate his expectations about what team could use his services. He actually put up solid numbers (8 PPG and 8.8 APG) in his one season with the Lakers, and the PG out of North Carolina should eventually find a spot in the league that works for him. The Timberwolves just don’t seem like they need another pass-first PG at this point.
