5 Teams That Could Realistically Trade For Carmelo Anthony

By Timothy Downs

In an article discussing potential options for the Phoenix Suns to trade Markieff Morris, Grantland’s Zach Lowe touched on the New York Knicks‘ willingness to trade Carmelo Anthony. Although the team isn’t yet ready to put a “For Sale” sign around his neck, the Knicks are reportedly “getting closer” to a place where they’d be willing to part ways with Anthony.

With that in mind, I decided to take a look at some potential landing spots. These five teams would be wise to reach out about Anthony once he hits the trading block.

5. Los Angeles Lakers

With Kobe Bryant heading into his final NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers (who've coveted Carmelo Anthony in the past) are in desperate need of star power. Anthony would give the Lakers that, and immediately become the best player on the team. Anthony lives in Los Angeles in the offseason, this makes too much sense as the Lakers could move Julius Randle and others to get it done.

4. Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns infuriated Markieff Morris this offseason when they traded his twin brother, Marcus, to the Detroit Pistons. Morris has since essentially demanded a trade and declared he no longer wants to be a part of the Suns franchise going forward. The Suns and the New York Knicks are a perfect match.

3. Miami Heat

The New York Knicks would probably request rookie Justise Winslow and much more from the Miami Heat, but with Dwyane Wade on the back nine of his career, it's entirely possible the Heat, who've been linked to Carmelo Anthony in the past, would make a sincere effort to get a deal done.

2. Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings have been chasing big-name players all offseason, but the best they could come up with was Rajon Rondo. The Kings are heading into a new arena, and clearly are an aggressive franchise that wants to win now. A package starting with Rudy Gay and a ton of picks could make some sense for both parties. However, Anthony and Kings head coach George Karl spent six seasons together with the Denver Nuggets. The relationship didn't end on great terms, and a lot would have to be worked out between the two prior to this deal coming to fruition.

You just know Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is salivating at the chance of landing Carmelo Anthony after losing out on DeAndre Jordan. Anthony would make the Mavericks a force to be reckoned with, and expedite Dallas' rebuilding process.
