The New Orleans Pelicans are a team on the rise with a bright future ahead of them. Anthony Davis will be their cornerstone for at least the next six years and the team has a new head coach who just won a championship. With the Pelicans expected to have sufficient cap space during the highly anticipated summer of 2016, here are the five free agents they should target.

The Pelicans are always talking about roster continuity and how it is important for winning teams. They should take care of Eric Gordon as their first priority during free agency next season. Gordon is used to the system, and he has still has room to grow as a scorer.

Parsons could be looking to leave the Dallas Mavericks if the team doesn’t reach the playoffs this upcoming season. He has a player option, and the Pelicans should go after him if he opts out. The Pelicans would be getting a perimeter player who scores at least 15 points per game while also shooting very well from three-point range.

3. Nicolas Batum

Batum might have underperformed last season, but he is the type of small forward the Pelicans should target. He can defend multiple positions and shoot good enough for teams to have to respect him. Unless Quincy Pondexter overachieves this season, the small forward position will be the most important spot for the Pelicans to fix in free agency.

2. Mike Conley

Conley has been underrated for several seasons. He defends well, runs the offense the way a coach wants and can score 15 to 18 points every game. With Conley entering free agency after this upcoming season, the Pelicans should target him if Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday don’t prove that they can be All-Star caliber point guards in the future.

The Pelicans getting LeBron James is a long shot. But if the Cleveland Cavaliers win a title this season, James will have won a championship for the Cleveland fanbase and should no longer have any obligations to the team. Also, James could be looking to pair himself with Davis and create the best duo in basketball for years to come.
