Dallas Mavericks Shouldn't Retire Tyson Chandler's Number

Rick Carlisle recently declared that the Dallas Mavericks should retire Tyson Chandler‘s number, but that is patently absurd. The defensive-minded big man has only played two seasons for the Mavericks during his entire career, and they might as well retire Jason Kidd‘s number if they’re going to do it for Chandler.

Should owner Mark Cuban apologize for the way his organization has treated Chandler in free agency? Yes, but that doesn’t mean you immortalize him for all eternity. Cuban should feel bad for basically throwing the big man to the curb twice. The first time it was right after the Mavs won a title, and that move looks pretty dumb in retrospect. The second time around, Dallas decided to snub Chandler and pursue DeAndre Jordan. We all know how that one worked out, and it may have even doomed the Mavericks for the next five years. Chandler was surprised by the decision given Cuban’s comments about not wanting to make the same mistake twice, and the 2012 Defensive Player of the Year said this to the Arizona Republic:

“When they traded for me to come back, I sat at the podium with everybody else and heard them say this was going to be a long-term deal and they weren’t going to make the same mistake as last time and blah-blah-blah. Seven months later, the same thing happens again. But I learned in this business that you can’t trust everybody. That’s why it is what it is.”

Dallas now has four centers on their roster in Zaza Pachulia, Salah Mejri, JaVale McGee and Samuel Dalembert, and those guys are all kind of a joke compared to Chandler.

It should be intriguing to hear if Carlisle gets reprimanded for making these comments because his words appear to undermine Cuban’s management style in a lot of ways. Dirk Nowitzki is the forgotten victim in all of these events. His Hall of Fame career is sputtering to a finish, and this is due to the fact that Dallas can’t find any quality talent to put around him. Keeping Chandler would’ve at least given the Mavericks a shot at the playoffs, but they’ll be relegated to the lottery again with the roster Cuban has put together. Much props to Chandler for the way he has always handled himself during his career, but he shouldn’t hold his breath on getting that number retired.
