The Dallas Mavericks have been a playoff team for every season of Mark Cuban's tenure as owner except for one. The 2015-16 campaign looks like it is going to be the second. The infamous loss of DeAndre Jordan in free agency was crushing to their hopes and now they face a potential tanking situation. When the highlight of your free agency is a 30-year-old coming off of Achilles surgery, you might have problems. Also, Deron Williams is their PG.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle are so competitive that they don't have it in them to tank. They would rather fight it out for the No. 8 seed. Cuban worked very hard to make sure that this organization would not become one that was no longer known as losers, so he definitely doesn't want them associated with tanking. The Mavericks are winners.

Dirk Nowitzki is one of the most loyal superstars of all time. He is not the player he once was, but he can still contribute. With a minutes reduction this year, he will be refreshed in what could possibly be his last season at 37 years old.

Dallas is going to monitor Parsons' minutes coming off of serious surgery that he had on his hand. When he gets back to his normal playing time he will be primed for a breakout season. Parsons and Matthews paired together on the wing has the potential to be an excellent combination. He has all the motivation to play well after failing to lure DeAndre Jordan to Dallas.

The Mavericks have plenty of veterans who are smart and know the system in Dallas. It starts with guys like Devin Harris and J.J. Barea of course, who seem like they will be Mavs forever. The addition of new veterans like Zaza Pachulia and John Jenkins will be a positive. Pachulia is an underrated starter, and Jenkins had an outstanding preseason which has already translated into the regular season.

Dallas is in a period of transition. Most teams in that position don't have the luxury of an elite coach, so the Mavs are very lucky. Rick Carlisle always manages to get the most out of his players. When his offense is executed correctly (not by Rajon Rondo) it is a thing of beauty. Having Carlisle on the sidelines this season may be Dallas' greatest asset.
