Eric Gordon's Injury Is Final Nail In New Orleans Pelicans' Coffin

By Frank Ewere

It finally appears as if the New Orleans Pelicans should start preparing for next season. The Pelicans suffered a major blow with another injury to one of their key players. At 15-27, it will be hard to bounce back after losing shooting guard Eric Gordon for an extended period of time.

The Pelicans believe Gordon is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks after successful surgery to repair his fractured right ring finger (Gordon is a right-handed shooter). Gordon was injured during the third quarter of New Orleans’ 114-99 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on January 19.

The loss of Gordon comes at an unfortunate time. Not only are the Pelicans only four wins away from being a team that would make the playoffs, but they have currently won four out of their last five games (including two straight). The Pelicans are also averaging a little over 109 points per game during their resurgence.

Gordon has been the player they could count on the most. He has played 41 games this season and is averaging 14.9 points per game while shooting 37.7 percent from three-point range in 33.4 minutes of play. Norris Cole and Jrue Holiday will probably fill in at the shooting guard position, but their production from the perimeter won’t be the same.

To make matters worse, the Pelicans had been thinking about making a trade to shake up their roster after a disappointing season. Most people in opposing front offices were contacting the team about the availability of Ryan Anderson. The Pelicans preferred to trade Gordon, not Anderson, but with Gordon injured many teams aren’t going to want to take a look at him.

With Gordon presumably out until March, unless the Pelicans make a strong push before the All-Star break it appears as if their season is (unofficially) over. Moving forward, the Pelicans will now have to plan better and have reliable depth to surround Anthony Davis in the event that injuries happen to their team.
