5 Most Likely Landing Spots For Former New York Knicks Head Coach Derek Fisher

After a stretch that has seen the team lose nine out of 10 games and fall to 23-31 on the season, Derek Fisher was fired as head coach of the New York Knicks on Monday. Fisher appeared to be team president Phil Jackson’s hand-picked head coach, after losing out on Steve Kerr, but a 40-96 record was apparently not good enough to exercise some patience.

As a five-time NBA champion during his playing career, Fisher should not lack for opportunities if he wants to continue to coach. Here are five possible landing spots for Fisher going forward.

5. Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves seem unlikely to keep Sam Mitchell in place as head coach beyond this season. Fisher may be able to reach and motivate young players, which is an area Mitchell has struggled with at times, so he looks like a possible fit for Minnesota if they look to make a change.

4. San Antonio Spurs

Fisher had no coaching experience prior to being hired by the Knicks, so he would benefit from stepping back and working as an assistant. Going to San Antonio and working at the side of Gregg Popovich if there is an opportunity, would be a great scenario for Fisher to hone his coaching craft.

3. Sacramento Kings

Despite an apparent reversal after a report they would fire George Karl, it still seems to only be a matter of time before the Kings make a coaching change. After the season, if it gets to that point, Fisher could be a top candidate in Sacramento.

2. Los Angeles Lakers

Fisher spent most of his playing career with the Lakers, and they should be looking for a new head coach after the season. The fit looks solid, but Fisher would need a good group of assistants around him to avoid a repeat of New York.

Billy Donovan is on solid footing as head coach, but the Thunder's two stars could make a push for Fisher to be hired as an assistant.

Watch Marcus Smart's Epic Flop

Carmelo Anthony had a mismatch on Marcus Smart in the post, but Smart's flop was still a maneuver that went comically too far in an attempt to draw an offensive foul.
