Philadelphia 76ers Must Trade Isaiah Canaan Before 2015-16 Trade Deadline

By Kareem Gantt

Isaiah Canaan has been a surprise on an otherwise awful Philadelphia 76ers team.

Though Canaan is taking advantage of all of the playing time he has received with this putrid team, he may have earned himself a trade out of the City of Brotherly Love and land on a team that will use his talents to good use chasing after a playoff spot.

The point is, it doesn’t matter how good you are. In the NBA, greatness is ranked in wins and losses, and if someone were to write a book on Canaan tomorrow, his short legacy would read more like an obituary than a player who is averaging a career-best 10 points per game.

But it isn’t just his offense that makes Canaan such an intriguing trade target. Canaan is one of the Sixers’ best one-on-one defenders, and a guard who can contribute on both ends of the floor easily should make him a commodity on the trade market before the deadline.

Canaan is wasting away his prime in Philadelphia. The Sixers are (being extremely generous) at least four years away from even contending for a playoff seed in the ever growing Eastern Conference. Canaan didn’t figure to be that involved in Brett Brown’s system, but he has been and he can either be one of the centerpieces of a rebuilding Sixers franchise or take his talents elsewhere.
