Boston Celtics Would Be Crazy To Trade Avery Bradley At Deadline

By Kareem Gantt

The Boston Celtics have been one of the surprise contenders in the NBA this season, and although the Celtics have achieved (or overachieved) as a team, Avery Bradley has played the most important role in making Boston a tough team to beat.

Bradley is the last one of the Celtics’ Eastern Conference dynasty of the late 2000s, and his experience and leadership has paid tremendous dividends for one of the NBA’s youngest squads. So if the Celtics have any interest of packaging him in a deal that would ship David Lee out of town by the trade deadline, general manager Danny Ainge needs to seriously reconsider.

Bradley is Boston’s best on-the-ball defender, and he has also taken great strides on offense, averaging 15 points per game, five more than his career average. But Bradley has also, at times, grumbled about the four-year contract he inked in 2014, which would devalue over time.

Bradley’s frustration with his contract situation may be one of the chief reasons why Ainge is exploring what he can get in return for his rising star. That’s the only somewhat logical reason I can think of, anyway.

But Ainge shouldn’t really worry about Bradley’s happiness over his contract. The deal still has two more years on it, which would give the Celtics front office plenty of time to work out a new deal. And if Bradley maintains his upward trajectory, a new contract should happen.

Though it’s highly unlikely that the Celtics would give up Bradley before the trade deadline, anything can happen in the NBA. That’s why Celtics fans should be wary of what Ainge has up his sleeve.
