Dallas Mavericks Would Be Crazy To Trade Chandler Parsons At Deadline

By Kareem Gantt

Chandler Parson has had enough of trade talks, and really, there is no need for the Dallas Mavericks to even continue to discuss moving their do-it-all forward.

Now there are some legitimate reasons as to why the Mavericks would even explore moving their $45 million man. Chief among them is his poor history of health, which has haunted him throughout his short tenure in Dallas. These injury problems have resulted in a downturn in his numbers, as his 12.4 points and four rebounds a game are both below his career averages.

But now is not the time to give up on Parsons, especially during a stretch in which he appears to be getting his groove back. But, yet again, Parsons is in trade rumors, this time involving Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks.

It would be a dream for the Mavs to land Anthony, who reportedly is unhappy with the direction the Knicks are heading. But is giving up Parsons really worth taking on Anthony’s massive contract? I can see why the Mavs would be interested. Dirk Nowitzki is in the last seasons of his career, and the Mavericks need a new face of the franchise. And let’s be honest, Anthony is that “face of the franchise” type of player Parsons will never be.

But Parsons would be a great fit in a Carmelo-led Mavericks squad, which is why it would be insane for them to give him up in a trade. If Dallas wants Carmelo that badly, they have other pieces they can move, such as the underachieving Wesley Matthews.

But giving up Parsons should not be an option this season, nor next. He is an important player for Dallas and one they can ill afford to give away in a snap decision.
