Memphis Grizzlies' Future Is Finally Starting To Look Brighter With Deadline Deal

By Samuel Martell

We finally have our first three-team trade before the 2016 NBA deadline, and it includes the Memphis Grizzlies parting ways with veteran sharpshooting guard Courtney Lee. With trades coming from the Charlotte Hornets and the Miami Heat as well, Memphis not only added the Birdman to their den (Chris Andersen), but they also received P.J. Hairston and two second-rounders.

It looks like the aging Grizzlies are finally coming to terms with their unfortunate inability to truly contend for a championship once again. Acquiring Andersen from Miami is only a band-aid approach at best after Memphis lost superstar Marc Gasol for the rest of the season, but the biggest news is Hairston and those two second-round picks from Miami. Now that reality has struck them square in the face, it’s time for them to hibernate and prepare for the future.

After being drafted late in the first round from North Carolina, Hairston has had a difficult road thus far. He’s an older prospect now, but nonetheless a talented one, who has been struggling mightily as of late. But, hopefully the defensive mindset in Memphis can get him back on track. If so, they’ll have another wing player with a great motor for defense and the ability to hit the open triple on a moment’s notice.

It’s pretty darn evident that both Charlotte and Miami want to win now, so in turn Memphis saw an opportunity and struck. Receiving two future second-round picks may not seem like much to the casual viewer, but mark my words, Memphis is slowly trying to turn back the clock. In fact, expect more moves for future picks/prospects down the road.
