Los Angeles Lakers Must Give Up On Byron Scott, Turn Attention To Another Familiar Face

By Samuel Martell

This is no longer a league of half-court offense, steady old-school defense and sharing the common belief that certain sizes only meet certain position roles on the court. The NBA‘s now an up-tempo, fast-paced and versatile group. Russell Westbrook and Draymond Green are what works now, not the one-sided talents of Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki.

The current state of this new NBA will make coaches and players alike want to run more and more, and playing the game with clamps on their wheels does not help anyone. If fact, it greatly hinders everyone’s future. If the Los Angeles Lakers want to become great again, they must move past this so-called hold they seem to have on the past.

A great example would be that of the short marriage between former coach David Blatt and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Blatt was regarded as a slow half-court mind in basketball, as he preferred the grind on the court over speed any day. This, in turn, was a bad idea. Placing reins on superstars Kyrie Irving and LeBron James is not a championship idea, so as result Tyronn Lue took over and the Cavs look better than ever.

The same thing is true about current coach Bryon Scott and the youthful and energetic Lakers. Scott has done a decent job considering all his encounters and expectations, but the new Lake Show desperately needs to cut their youngsters loose if they ever want to taste the sweet fruits of success in this ever-changing league.

The Lakers have an extremely young three-headed monster in Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson and D’Angelo Russell. But the thing with monsters is, they need to be fed on a daily basis. Not just normal everyday food, but fast-paced transition chow. They need to cut loose, or they’ll be stuck into what they are now — normal role players.

Rumors have already circled around someone like Luke Walton to take over coaching duties for Los Angeles, and that’s not such a bad idea. It’s not their only option, but it’s the best one they have by far. Walton, as most know, has many ties to the city of Los Angeles.

So, what’s better than a young, experienced head coach with franchise ties already coming in and leading the charge at Staples Center? The answer would be nothing. In fact, this young squad has very similar makeup to that of the defending champion Golden State Warriors. It would be a relatively easy transition. Plus, it would only enhance the implications of what Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant did when they were in their prime.

All-in-all, it would absolutely be a perfect fit for Walton to rejoin the purple and gold.
