Miami Heat Have No Shortage Of Options To Fill Open Roster Spots

By Richard Nurse

As the NBA trade deadline ticked to an end, it was clear that the Miami Heat did exactly they set out to do since the beginning of the season when they traded Mario Chalmers to the Memphis Grizzlies — they found a way to inch under the luxury tax.

Not only were they successful at it, but they also came out with two roster spots to toy with to hopefully shore up three areas that have plagued them.

The power forward position has not been a problem area as of yet, however, it could be with Chris Bosh guaranteed to miss an unknown amount of action. So would David Lee be considered a choice? Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge is said to be setting up a meeting with him in the next 48 hours. Plus, the big man has always been known for being a top-notch on the boards with a decent midrange jump shot.

He could be a fit. A third point guard to play emergency ball handler in a glass is a less likely find, but at least one void at shooter should be able to be filled.

Unfortunately for Miami, the Joe Johnson situation seems confusing. One minute there are reports of him wanting to play for a winner and in the next there are stories of him wanting a Brooklyn Nets extension. Then there is Kevin Martin who may not want to give up next season’s $7.4 million check in a buyout.

On a lower level, a 56 percent shooter like Steve Novak is almost a lock to sign on in Miami — after his Denver buyout — due to his Marquette college ties to Dwyane Wade. That is if they actually want him. And that could be as good as it gets if someone like Anthony Morrow does not shake loose from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

If all else fails there is always Dorell Wright, but Miami did not show much interest in him during the offseason. But as the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson pointed out, “the Heat would need to wait a couple of weeks to sign (additional) players to stay below the tax line,” so you could be seeing a few 10-day contracts.
