5 Point Guard Options For The Undermanned Miami Heat

The Miami Heat’s point guard situation has hit an all-time low with the announcement that Beno Udrih would be sidelined for the season after his impending foot surgery. Pat Riley’s edict about not being “constrained by any repeater tax” will most definitely restrict any true signings for two weeks. So with that in mind, here are the team’s top options for filling their lead guard role.

5. Josh Richardson

Before Udrih’s injury, Josh Richardson saw his minutes go from barely there to averaging 21 per game as a combo guard -- mainly due to his energy and defensive prowess. However, he may be too young to hand the backup point guard reins to.

4. John Lucas III

John Lucas III is a point guard the Heat have been monitoring in the D-League since they released him during the preseason. He has never been great, but his veteran stability and 35 percent three-point shooting may be able to help off the bench.

3. Tony Wroten

Miami has had their eyes on Tony Wroten since his release from the 76ers in December. The 6-foot-6 combo guard cannot shoot the three, but he has the ability to handle ball pressure, get to the hole and go on double-digit scoring binges.

2. Briante Weber

Briante Weber is a name you may not know, but Miami signed the VCU alum in October in order to get a closer look at his Patrick Beverley-like defense on their D-League team. And his recent triple-double may be enough to garner a few 10-day contracts.

Tyler Johnson hit social media with a hint of optimism about returning sometime this season. This means the athletic point guard may be able to bring his pressure defense and team-leading 38 percent three-point percentage back for the playoffs.
