Ty Lawson was recently bought out by the Houston Rockets, and he was never a great fit there. It seems that Lawson has entered the part of his career where coming off the bench is ideal, and the Los Angeles Clippers would be the perfect team to aid his transition.
Lawson could potentially learn some tricks of the trade by playing under Chris Paul. Those two guys both played in the ACC during their collegiate careers, and maybe Paul could talk some sense into Ty. The Clippers might not be a true contender, but they are the team closest to that point who might be interested in Lawson. He would excel under head coach Doc Rivers, and it will be interesting to see if the Clippers put out any feelers out for the point guard.
If Lawson wants a starting position, then the Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks might be options for him. However, the Jazz had a shot at him during the trade deadline, and the Mavericks might be hesitant to try out another enigmatic point guard after the Rajon Rondo disaster last season.
Lawson must understand that his image has been tarnished by the last couple seasons. The Rockets were an awkward match for him from the start, and it didn’t help matters when Kevin McHale was fired 11 games into the season. Lawson needs to rehabilitate his reputation around the league, and signing with a contender in a supporting role would be the best way to achieve that. He put up nice numbers during his time with the Denver Nuggets, but we all saw how that worked out for him in the end.
Lawson proved he could be part of a championship team during his time with the North Carolina Tar Heels, but he just has to find the right situation for himself. He might have to accept a smaller role than usual for him to make it happen, but it would be worth the risk to put himself in a winning environment again.
