San Antonio Spurs Add Another Valuable Veteran To Backcourt With Signing Of Kevin Martin

By Brad Berreman

With a turn toward young players, the Minnesota Timberwolves have bought out and waived two veteran guards recently. Andre Miller was first to go, and now Kevin Martin will reportedly join his former teammate with the San Antonio Spurs.

Martin is having one of the worst seasons of his career, averaging 10.6 points per game over 39 games while making less than 37 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Inconsistent playing time and a recurring wrist injury have played a role in those struggles, but his drop-off and a player option worth close to $7.4 million for next season rendered Minnesota’s rumored efforts to trade Martin fruitless.

The Spurs have to clear a roster spot before officially signing Martin, but the report surfacing suggests that corresponding move will be done quickly. Martin can provide scoring punch and perimeter shooting off the bench, assuming he is healthy, and it’s safe to say Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will find a way to get the most out of the now 33-year-old veteran shooting guard.

Joining a championship contender could help turn this season around for Martin, but it’s worth wondering how his typically poor effort defensively will fit in with the Spurs. But he’s not being counted on as a primary player, and anything notable Martin contributes from here on out this season should be considered a bonus in San Antonio.
