5 Players Who Won't Be On Dallas Mavericks In 2016-17 NBA Season

By Chipper Murphy

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the surprise teams in the Western Conference, defying the expectation that they would have a rare down year. However, when the offseason comes around they will undoubtedly look to get younger. The point guard position, specifically, needs a substantial upgrade. These are five players who won’t be on the team in 2016-17.

5. J.J. Barea

J.J. Barea is clearly a sentimental favorite with the Mavericks, but it's time to move on — again — and find better options at the league's most important position. Barea was last out of all four Dallas point guards in real plus-minus and last of all point guards in the league in defensive RPM.

JaVale McGee has actually put up a couple good games up this season, and Dallas should use those rare moments as a bargaining chip to move his reasonable salary in the offseason.

3. Charlie Villanueva

Charlie Villanueva will be a free agent at the end of the season, and the Mavericks can do better than him in filling the bottom of a depth chart. Villanueva is taking 2.9 three-point attempts per game and only making them at a 25 percent clip, and his team-low ORtg of 90 leaves a lot to be desired.

Like Villanueva, Raymond Felton will be a free agent at the end of the season. He turns 32 in June, and the Mavs will have little reason to keep him. Felton's shooting 29.7 percent from downtown, and that's not going to get it done on a team that is fourth in the league in three-point attempt rate.

1. Deron Williams

Deron Williams has a player option for 2016-17, which he will certainly exercise given the amount of money that will be thrown around during free agency. Williams hasn't been efficient this season either, in the 40th percentile in points per possession against the rest of the league on isolation plays and the 50th percentile as the ball handler on pick and roll plays. Dallas has to upgrade at the point guard spot.
