5 Players Who Won't Be Back With Sacramento Kings In 2016-17 NBA Season

By Brad Berreman

The Sacramento Kings are again a picture of dysfunction this season, with constant rumors surrounding George Karl‘s job status and DeMarcus Cousins providing distractions that obscure his talent level far too often. With an offseason of uncertainty sure to come, here are five players who won’t be back with the Kings next season.

5. SF Caron Butler

The Kings were trying to trade Butler as far back as December, but found no takers. He has a $1.5 million player option for next season, but the veteran swingman could easily decline it and try to latch on elsewhere. Retirement could also be an option.

4. G Seth Curry

When healthy, Curry has barely played for the Kings this season (10.5 minutes per game). He is not nearly as talented as his brother, but Curry can surely find a better opportunity with a superior organization next season.

3. SG Ben McLemore

McLemore has vastly underachieved since being drafted No. 7 overall in 2013, and he was the subject of heavy trade rumors around the deadline. The offseason should provide a renewed opportunity for the Kings to trade McLemore, if they want to, and based on perception of potential multiple teams could have interest.

2. F Rudy Gay

Trading Cousins is a lingering option for the Kings, but that would surely signal a full-on rebuild that ownership may not want to oversee and it's unlikely equal value could be acquired. Gay is a viable trade chip, though, with one more guaranteed year left on his contract (player option for 2017-18), and it wouldn't be surprising if he asks to be moved this summer.

1. PG Rajon Rondo

Rondo signed a one-year deal with the Kings last summer, and by all public accounts he has not been a distraction this season. Rondo should be able to find a multi-year deal somewhere this offseason, and I'm betting it won't be in Sacramento.
