San Antonio Spurs Star Kawhi Leonard Drives a '97 Chevy Tahoe, Uses Wingstop Coupons Like A Frugal Boss

By Timothy Downs

The San Antonio Spurs are having a sensational season at 57-10, yet rarely make headlines playing in the shadow of the Golden State Warriors, who are all the rage among NBA media and aficionados alike.

But that’s the way they like it.

The Spurs have won five championships under head coach Gregg Popovich, and have done so sans the braggadocio that typically accompanies success in the NBA. Tim Duncan is clearly the most humble and unassuming superstar the league has ever seen, and his teammates have always followed his lead.

With Duncan close to retirement at 39 years old, it’s only right that Kawhi Leonard, 24, is now the face of the franchise, as he fits San Antonio’s style to a tee.

In a recent Sports Illustrated interview, a number of interesting nuggets became known about Leonard. For starters, despite a $94 million contract, Leonard still drives the same car he drove in high school, which is a 1997 Chevy Tahoe.

“It runs, and it’s paid off,” Leonard told Sports Illustrated.

Not only is he keeping his vehicle purchases to a minimum in efforts to hold onto his fortune, the frugal reigning Defensive Player of the Year also still uses Wingstop coupons and tends to freak out without them.

“[Leonard] is happy to sponsor Wingstop, which sends him coupons for free wings, so he can feed his Mango Habanero addiction. This winter, after his $94 million contract kicked in, he panicked when he lost his coupons. Wingstop generously replenished his supply.”

It would have been impossible for the Spurs to find a better man for Duncan to pass the torch to than Leonard. Some things are just meant to be.
