Denver Nuggets Need To Focus On Developing Their Young Backcourt In 2015-16 Stretch Run

By Brendan Patel

The Denver Nuggets have had a rough season, and have to be looking forward to the offseason with the hopes of improving their roster. They do have some potential throughout their roster, including a young backcourt that could develop into a formidable duo down the road. The organization needs to make sure that they are focusing on their development, and getting them as many minutes together as possible.

Emmanuel Mudiay was an extremely raw prospect entering the draft, but one with great size and elite athleticism at the point guard position. He has been asked to make a lot of plays with the ball in his hands, and his youth is evident. He plays fast, but sometimes loses control and that results in a lot of turnovers. His poor shooting has made it easier for defenses to give him space, and they can ignore him on the perimeter. However, Mudiay is also very young, and a lot of guards struggle as they adjust to the league. He can be a very valuable two-way player, and if he can develop a reliable jump shot to go along with his speed, he would be difficult to stop.

Gary Harris has the potential to be the perfect running mate for Mudiay, especially if he can find more consistency in his outside shot. He was a good shooter coming into the league, and can be successful both on the ball and off the ball. He can get up and down the court, and could feed off of Mudiay’s ability to create. Harris also has the tools to be a good defender, and the two of them can switch a lot of matchups with ease.

Harris and Mudiay still have a long way to go, and the Nuggets need to make sure that they are getting plenty of minutes together. The team is struggling right now, and it may take a while for them to get back on the right track. Luckily they have some talented young players, and can hope to build around them for the future.
