Portland Trail Blazers Need To Focus On Keeping Stars Fresh During 2015-16 Stretch Run

By Brendan Patel

The Portland Trail Blazers continue to be one of the most surprising teams this season, thanks to star player Damian Lillard and his backcourt partner C.J. McCollum. They have a nice blend of role players who provide versatility to give them an effective rotation. They are still a young team and their first-round matchup will likely be a difficult one, but this is a team that is not afraid of anyone.

A lot of the burden has fallen on Lillard to carry the team, and he has done an exceptional job so far this season. He is one of the most exciting guards to watch on the offensive end, capable of going off and leading his team to victory on any night. He has continually gotten better on defense since his rookie season and plays with a certain chip on his shoulder that makes him hard to contain.

McCollum is a player who has really stepped up this season, and he’s arguably the most improved player in the league. He is a very good shooter, but he’s also capable of creating offense on his own which helps when Lillard needs rest. He is a solid defender which also makes him a good fit next to Lillard.

Both of these players have been doing a lot for the Trail Blazers and logging heavy minutes throughout the season. The team needs them to be playing at a high level in order to succeed, and it is hard to see them not wearing down to close the season.

Although the Trail Blazers will likely want to avoid the top two teams in the Western Conference during the first round, any series will be tough given the amount of talent at the top of the conference. The team needs to try and find ways to rest their star players with the hopes of keeping them fresher as the postseason approaches. It won’t be easy, but this team could pull an upset in the first round if they are healthy and their stars catch fire.
