5 Players Who Might Fill Out The Miami Heat’s Roster

By Richard Nurse

Ten games are all the Miami Heat’s season has left in it. And as they wind down a few things are starting to become clearer: the chances of Chris Bosh returning this season are slimmer than the team’s chances to wrap up third place in the Eastern Conference if they drop winnable games. Just as important is the fact that the Heat are getting closer to that point in April where they can finally fill out the roster without luxury tax repercussions.

With a few free agents left and Miami’s D-League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, doing so well, here are five players who could lock up spots 14 and 15.

5. DeAndre Liggins - Sioux Falls Skyforce

DeAndre Liggins had a cup of coffee with the Miami Heat during the 2013-14 season as a 10-day call-up. But this season has seen the rangy 6-foot-6 guard not only look good enough on defense to earn a roster spot, but his 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists make him a worthy candidate. His 43 percent three-point shooting doesn't hurt either.

4. Greg Whittington - Sioux Falls Skyforce

Versatile would be the best way to describe Greg Whittington. After sitting out two seasons while recovering from ACL surgery, the former Georgetown Hoya impressed the Heat with his ability to handle the ball, pass, score, rebound and play defense. The 6-foot-8 forward is currently averaging 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the D-League.

3. John Lucas III - Fort Wayne Ants

If the Miami Heat are looking to go into the postseason with extra protection at the point guard position, odds are they might give John Lucas III a call. He was a late offseason cut who can usually be relied on for pesky defense and his career 35 percent three-point shooting.

If the Heat are comfortable going into the playoffs with only Goran Dragic and Josh Richardson at point guard and are not looking for a vet, they need to lock up the Skyforce’s near triple-double machine Briante Weber. They don't want to miss out on Patrick Beverley’s defensive clone the same way they did with the original.

1. Dorell Wright – Free Agent

Dorell Wright has been relatively quiet since returning from averaging 24 points in China. So much so that it feels like he is waiting for the franchise that drafted him out of high school to bring him back. If he can be anything like the 3-and-D player he showed flashes of in Golden State and Portland, he would easily nab Gerald Green’s spot.
