Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James and Kevin Love Must Gel Soon

By Dave Daniels

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been a chemistry mess for quite a while now, and a lot of this is LeBron James‘ doing. ESPN’s Zach Lowe recently wrote about their problems, and many of them center around LeBron and Kevin Love failing to execute pick-and-rolls correctly.

“It sounded good to a lot of people,” Cavs assistant coach Jim Boylan told ESPN.com, “but it’s something we haven’t been able to take advantage of. It’s easy for teams to scheme against. They switch and we’re stuck with an isolation.”

You would think that Love and James would be intelligent enough to punish defenses when they leave a smaller player on Kevin or a bigger guy on LeBron, but it hasn’t worked out that way this season.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Love moved this summer if the Cavaliers don’t win the title, and winning isn’t a likely scenario when you consider the talent and efficiency of squads like the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors.

The Cavaliers are rightfully favorites to steamroll over everyone else in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, but that isn’t a guarantee either. Cleveland’s lack of identity as a team should be concerning to their fans, and it wouldn’t be impossible for a group like the Miami Heat or Boston Celtics to rally for an upset. The Cavaliers won’t be walking through the playoffs by any means.

James can feel his NBA mortality more now than ever, and he is probably jealous of all the attention the Warriors are getting this year. He’ll have to resolve his relationship with Love for any chance of success this season, and that doesn’t seem like it can happen with less than a month left.

The Cavaliers will be a much different team next year if the last couple weeks have been any indication, and the super team LeBron referenced recently could at least somewhat be assembled if Carmelo Anthony or Chris Paul allow themselves to be moved from their current situation. If James and Love don’t gel soon, then the Cavs will be facing an uncertain future when it comes to ever winning a title.
