Sacramento Kings Would Be Crazy To Keep George Karl Over 2016 Offseason

By Dave Daniels

The Sacramento Kings have had a disappointing season for a lot of reasons. DeMarcus Cousins has been brilliant individually, but it hasn’t translated into wins for the team. Cousins didn’t get along with George Karl from the moment the head coach became leader of the Kings, and matters weren’t helped when Karl tried to get the big man traded behind the scenes.

Something needs to change in Sacramento, and it wouldn’t make much sense to ship Cousins out. Teams like the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards would be understandably interested in his services; however, the Kings should hang onto him for as long as he can stand it. He is clearly their best player, and he is worth all the trouble because of his value on the court.

Rajon Rondo has thrived playing next to Cousins, and if the Kings can find a coach to connect with them, then they would be a real threat to make the playoffs next year.

Karl will be the scapegoat this season, and that will probably be the best for both sides. He was never the right coach for this team. They needed somebody much younger to connect with the players, and he took the job because not many other franchises were giving him a call. The Kings, meanwhile, must figure out how they’re going to evolve in the future. Signing Vlade Divac to an extension seemed premature, but it appears they’re going all in on his vision for the franchise.

Sacramento would be crazy to keep Karl on the payroll next year. They already contemplated firing him a couple times this season, and the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Those are some words of wisdom from Albert Einstein, and the Kings would be smart to heed his advice.
