The Houston Rockets dropped Game 2 of their first-round series against the Golden State Warriors on Monday night even though the Warriors were without Stephen Curry. Although it’s technically still possible for the Rockets to win the series, everyone can see the writing on the wall that the season is almost over.

All indications are that the Rockets will fire J.B. Bickerstaff following their series against the Warriors and reports are saying that Jeff Van Gundy has emerged as the top candidate.

From Yahoo Sports:

Jeff Van Gundy is at the top of the Houston Rockets’ list of potential candidates along with Thibodeau, league sources said. Jeff Van Gundy resigned as Rockets coach in 2007 after four seasons and still lives in Houston. The Rockets won’t begin a coaching search until the team’s postseason ends. Houston is trailing Golden State 1-0 (now 2-0) in their Western Conference first-round series. Jeff Van Gundy doesn’t discuss jobs with teams who have a coach in place, and J.B. Bickerstaff has been the Rockets’ interim coach since the firing of Kevin McHale in November.

Van Gundy coached the Rockets from 2003-07 and still lives in the area. There’s no coach more qualified for the Rockets job than Van Gundy.
