Luke Walton Should Stay With Golden State Warriors Next Season

The Los Angeles Lakers recently released Byron Scott as their head coach, and this was made public on Sunday night. Their coaching search will begin immediately, and it was foolish of them to wait this long to fire Scott. They could’ve been in the mix to sign Tom Thibodeau, but the Minnesota Timberwolves were wise enough to bring him on board quickly.

The Lakers will now have to look at other options. One man they’ll definitely interview is Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton, but he should remain with his current team for next season (at least). The Warriors could be going for their third straight championship at that time, and that would be something worth being a part of.

Of course, Golden State’s championship hopes all hinge on the health of Stephen Curry‘s knee going forward, and it will be revealing to see how long they rest him after he sprained his MCL on Sunday.

Walton should stay with the Warriors for a lot of reasons. The first is that we don’t know how much longer Steve Kerr will be a head coach. He had some severe back trouble in the early season, and this gave Walton a chance to prove that he was capable of leading the team as interim head coach to start the year. His record was an impressive 39-4 before Kerr returned.

Walton could become the official head coach for Golden State during the summer of 2017, and that would be a sweet gig for anyone’s first job. The Warriors are allowing Walton to attend interviews during the playoffs, but he must fit those in between rounds. The Lakers will certainly give him a call; however, he must do what is best for his professional career, and that would appear to be remaining in Golden State for the time being.
