Los Angeles Clippers Should Consider Renaming Their Franchise

The Los Angeles Clippers appear to be a cursed franchise. They have looked that way for many decades now, and this season has been no different. The Clippers recently found out that Blake Griffin will be out of the playoffs entirely with an injured left quadriceps muscle, and Chris Paul is sidelined indefinitely with a broken right hand.

The Clippers are now down 3-2 against the Portland Trail Blazers, but even if they get out of the first round, the Golden State Warriors will be waiting. Stephen Curry might be sidelined for a bit, but the Warriors will still steamroll Los Angeles.

The Clippers should consider rebranding themselves, because at this point they just have to try something different. You could argue that they should make a trade to blow up this roster in the offseason, but what kind of value would they get back by trading Paul or Griffin? Not a lot.

The best move would be to create a new name for themselves that wasn’t introduced by former owner Donald Sterling. His racist ways were common knowledge around the NBA for many years, and thankfully his words were caught on tape, which ultimately led to a lifelong ban from the league. Karma is real, and the Clippers have been suffering from Sterling’s bad reputation for decades. They should really think about moving on, because they seem to be doomed for failure at the moment.

The Clippers would be better off with a different name, and it doesn’t even really matter what it lands on. Becoming the Coyotes, Dreams or Stars would help Doc Rivers and company erase some of the past, and it would certainly take some of Sterling’s stink off of the franchise. Los Angeles won’t have any teams in the playoffs after the next couple of weeks, and that will be the perfect opportunity for the Clippers to rename themselves.
