Kevin Durant Rumors: San Antonio Spurs Would Be An Enticing Landing Spot

The San Antonio Spurs easily handled the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of their second round playoff series Saturday night, which by itself is not all that interesting. But the free agent destination for Thunder forward Kevin Durant this offseason is a constant source of rumors and speculation, and Zach Lowe of ESPN.com has mentioned the Spurs as a possible suitor.

Here’s a snippet from Lowe’s recent article:

Thunder-Spurs III is no undercard, especially in the final year of Kevin Durant’s contract, with San Antonio quietly discussing what kind of cap gymnastics it would take to get into the Durant derby, per several league sources.

The prospect of a new “Big Three” in San Antonio is intriguing, with Durant joining Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Alridge. But the salary cap “gymnastics” that will be necessary, without knowing the exact moves that would be required, makes that scenario look unlikely. Durant could of course take less than his market value to bolster his chances of winning a championship, but it’s worth wondering if that’s something he will seriously consider.

Durant will have his pick of interested teams this summer, with varying degrees of salary cap space as it stands right now. Only a handful will have a legitimate chance to sign him though, and the long-running winning pedigree the Spurs have built will put them right in the mix. If things can come together financially, including the Spurs likely having to make some tough decisions on their end, Durant would have to listen to an offer from San Antonio.
