Boston Celtics Would Be Crazy To Keep Evan Turner Over 2016 Offseason

The Boston Celtics have one of the best head coaches in the league. Brad Stevens got more out of this crew in the 2015-16 season than many could’ve predicted. If the Celtics make the right moves this summer, then they could be a contender in the Eastern Conference for years to come. There will be plenty of options in free agency for them.

Kevin Durant has even been mentioned as a possibility, but the people of Boston shouldn’t get their hopes up too high on that. They could add a piece like Al Horford or Hassan Whiteside, but some things seem certain. The Celtics won’t keep most of their unrestricted free agents on the roster next season, and the first guy they should let walk out the door is Evan Turner.

Stevens wants Turner back in the fold, but management should realize that they can’t afford to pay him and another marquee free agent.

“I love Evan Turner,” Stevens said to the Boston Globe. “I think he’s a great teammate. I think he’s a hard worker. I think he loves basketball. I don’t think you can overvalue that. He loves basketball, and he never once — we didn’t have two conversations about starting or not starting. It was never about him. It was always about how to help us put our best foot forward, and he knew his role in helping us do that.”

Turner is mainly a midrange specialist, and the problem with that skill is its inefficiency. He would be better suited on a team where he can dominate the ball more, because the Celtics are interested in team basketball. Turner shot a dismal 24.1 percent from behind the three-point line this season, and that is a trait he should’ve improved in the last few years. The NBA is evolving into a league where shooting is the most important ability, and Turner isn’t exactly elite at it.

The Celtics would be wise to use the money bookmarked for him on another free agent, because he doesn’t fit into where the sport is heading. Stevens can find another sixth man to carry the scoring load, and they might even be able to find one who can space the floor. The Celtics are going to have many opportunities this summer, but they would be crazy to keep Turner on their team.
