Charlotte Hornets Would Be Crazy To Keep Frank Kaminsky Over 2016 Offseason

By Dave Daniels

The Charlotte Hornets had a banner year. They defied everyone’s expectations by getting into the playoffs, and they clearly have a lot to build on going forward. However, they must make the right decisions this summer.

One thing they should do is trade Frank Kaminsky. They actually never should’ve drafted him in the first place. Justise Winslow was still on the board when Kaminsky was picked, and the Boston Celtics offered a mammoth trade package featuring four first-rounders to get Charlotte’s pick at No. 9 overall. The Hornets ultimately declined the deal and chose Kaminsky.

He is on his rookie contract, though, and so he might have some trade value that would allow them to get another pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Kaminsky was a phenomenal player in college, and the Wisconsin Badgers probably deserved to win it all after upending the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats. But he was never going to be a great pro player. He is too slow to be in an uptempo offense as a center, and he isn’t a good enough shooter to play stretch forward. He shot 33.7 percent from the three-point line this season, and he only played 21.1 minutes per game as a result.

If the Hornets keep Kaminsky next season, then his role wouldn’t be exactly clear. Starting power forward Marvin Williams is an unrestricted free agent, and they might try to start Frank at that spot. This would be a mistake, because he simply isn’t ready for that amount of responsibility at this moment.

General manager Rich Cho has a lot of choices this summer, and he better make intelligent ones. Otherwise the Hornets are going to be back in the lottery quite quickly, and the first order of business should be trading Kaminsky. They would be crazy to keep him after what he’s shown so far. He shouldn’t be too hard on himself if he gets traded, but he must improve his game to earn a starting position anywhere in the future.
