Cleveland Cavaliers Just Look Too Confident To Lose

As a long-suffering Cleveland sports fan, I’ve seen enough blunders and spectacular failures to know that cockiness is a feeling rarely felt. Sure, some local teams have played like contenders every now and then, but the bottom always seems to fall out. Like my father before me, I know to always be wary when things are looking good for a Cleveland club.

With that out of the way, my goodness, this Cleveland Cavaliers team is on a completely different level. I’m not here to try and jinx anything and still won’t plan any parades until the trophy is handed over. Still, after winning their 10th straight postseason game in as many tries, the Cavs are on an absolute tear and just look too confident to cool off anytime soon.

You had to sense that, even after getting decimated in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Toronto Raptors were going to give Cleveland a better effort in Game 2. Sure enough, this indeed took place last night. Toronto tried to cut off the layup lines it was giving away in Game 1, and offensively seemed to show a little more fire. At 4:05 of the second quarter, both teams were locked in a 46-46 tie.

At the halftime buzzer, it was 62-48 Cavs.

Even with the Raptors fighting harder and showing confidence, it didn’t matter. Cleveland barely batted an eye, and all it took was a quick cool-off from Toronto to blow the game open.

The full recap could be described in one sentence. The Raptors gave a much better fight in Game 2, and then they lost by 19.

It all goes back to how poised these Cavs are this postseason, how convinced they are that, no matter what the opponent does to try and counter, it won’t matter. Quite frankly, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen from any iteration of this team.

There’s just no room for mistakes against these Cavs. Any time Toronto falls on even the slightest shooting decline, the lead increases to double digits before anyone has a chance to realize it. There were moments last night where it seemed as though the Raptors felt they were clawing back into this series. Before any confidence could be built, Cleveland was there to deflate it.

Toronto has quickly learned just how difficult it is to play a Cavs team which is firing on all cylinders. Heck, at one point Raptors guard Kyle Lowry was so frustrated by the events unfolding he had to head back to the locker room to “decompress” midway through the second quarter.

Last night was just more proof that Cleveland is carrying itself as a team that knows it’s playing its best basketball, and unless the opponent puts forth an absolutely flawless effort, it’s going to come out on top.

This isn’t to deem the Raptors extinct, not yet at least. They’ll be fueled by a raucous Air Canada Centre Saturday, there’s no doubt about that. Game 3 might end up as one of the more tightly-contested games in this series.

The problem, at least for the Raptors, is it might not matter in the long run. Cleveland hasn’t flinched once this postseason. Not when the Detroit Pistons gave them more than expected. Not when the Atlanta Hawks stormed back to take a fourth quarter lead in Game 1. And not when Toronto increased its defensive effort in Game 2.

This isn’t to say the Cavs simply aren’t going to lose in these playoffs. However, not one player within that locker room seems to be considering the idea of a potential defeat. As a result, Cleveland is looking stronger than ever as the Cavs steamroll towards the Finals.
